The Perfect Dish...

I’m not a very Pinterest-y sort of girl. Where others make creations of “awe,” I make creations of “oh no.” I believe posts of Pinterest fails are made for people like me to remind me that my worth is not based on whether my 4th-of-July cake actually resembles George Washington, my birthday cards are homemade, or my children stopped hitting each other for family photos.

Part of the problem with social media is that we all tend to put our best foot forward and leave the other foot hidden in our boot. When we do succeed in creating a beautiful dish, the picture we put on Instagram doesn’t show the hours of work or piles of dirty dishes lying in the background. The cards don’t show how much time and money went into our success, and the smiling family photo can’t begin to show the incessant bribes it took to get the youngest to stop crying (true story).

In an effort to convince others and ourselves that we have it all together, we have forgotten that no one on the planet truly has it all together. Cakes fall, cards get messed up, and children fight. But in truth, the cake still tastes delicious, the birthday cards are thrown away, and children make up.

Life is about progress, not perfection. It’s about the messy everyday ways we deal with the craziness of our lives, not about the family photo. It’s about the fact that we never stop cooking, even if it's not the perfect dish.

After decades of my life being centered around food, I finally started to realize that I did not have a food management problem. In all actuality, I had an emotion management problem.  - Becky Ivory
